What is ARA-290?
ARA-290 10mg, also called cibinetide, is an 11 amino acid peptide modelled on the hormone EPO. Its human trials are small, short and early.
EPO, or erythropoietin, is the hormone that drives up red blood cells. ARA-290 borrows part of its shape and acts on a different receptor, studied in tissue repair, without raising red blood cells.
Research on it has centred on nerve fibre loss and nerve pain, in small groups over short spells.
What the 3 PubMed papers cited for ARA-290 looked at, 2013 to 2017
In 2017, a phase 2b trial ran for 28 days in 64 people with sarcoidosis and loss of small nerve fibres, against placebo, measuring nerve fibre in the cornea, the clear front of the eye.
A 2015 phase 2 study, placebo-controlled and also 28 days long, enrolled people with type 2 diabetes and nerve pain, and measured blood sugar and pain scores.
In rats with swollen nerves, a 2013 study measured touch pain and heat pain with ARA-290.
These are small, short phase 2 trials and one rat study, so they count as early research only.

Reading the ARA-290 record
ARA-290 has an unusual design. It keeps part of the shape of EPO but leaves out the effect on red blood cells, and that is what makes it a research subject for nerves rather than blood.
Its human evidence comes from two phase 2 studies of 28 days each. Short, small studies like these look for a signal before larger trials; they cannot speak to anything lasting.
The rat study adds a detail of design: it measured two kinds of pain, touch and heat, in nerve swelling.
Its other name, cibinetide, appears in the 2017 trial report, while the 2015 and 2013 papers use ARA 290. Readers searching PubMed should try both names. Both human trials were phase 2, the stage that looks for a signal before larger trials.
Both trials in people cited here ran for 28 days. The 2015 study was a phase 2 study in people with type 2 diabetes and nerve pain. The 2017 trial was a phase 2b trial against a placebo in 64 people with sarcoidosis, and it counted nerve fibres in the cornea, the clear front of the eye.
Questions about ARA-290
Is ARA-290 the same as cibinetide?
Yes. Cibinetide is another name for ARA-290.
Does ARA-290 raise red blood cells like EPO?
It was designed not to. It is shaped after EPO but acts on a different receptor, without raising red blood cells.
How long did the ARA-290 trials last?
Both human trials cited ran for 28 days, one reason they count as early.
