MT-2 10mg peptide: a research vial of MT-2, also called Melanotan II, a seven amino acid ring built from alpha-MSH and tested in two small human studies, in 1996 and 2000; later papers are mostly side effect reports, among them a 2017 review.

What is MT-2?

MT-2 10mg, also called Melanotan II, is a lab-made ring of seven amino acids built from the hormone alpha-MSH. Most recent papers about it are case reports of side effects.

Its parent is alpha-MSH, the hormone that instructs skin to darken by making pigment. The seven amino acids of MT-2 are joined end to end in a ring.

A close relative sits in this catalogue: PT-141, also called bremelanotide.

What the 3 PubMed papers cited for MT-2 looked at, 1996 to 2017

Its human studies are few, small and old. Three men took part in a 1996 study of tanning, which recorded nausea, yawning and tiredness among its side effects.

Twenty men with erection problems joined a 2000 study that set MT-2 against placebo, measuring erections and sexual desire; nausea was a frequent side effect.

Later case reports, gathered in a 2017 review, tie melanotan to changing moles and a few skin cancers, melanoma among them.

Case reports do not establish cause. Even so, mole changes and skin cancer reports are the main thing the recent literature says about this compound.

Reading the MT-2 record

The record for MT-2 is old at the start and cautionary at the end. The human studies date from the 1990s and are tiny: three men in one, twenty in another. The later literature is mostly case reports of side effects.

Case reports cannot prove that a compound caused a problem. They can show a pattern worth watching, and the 2017 review found such a pattern around moles and skin cancer. That is why the side effects lead this page.

Its relative PT-141 10mg took a different path, from small studies to large phase 3 trials and a United States approval as the prescription medicine bremelanotide. The research-grade vials sold here are not that medicine, and neither is approved for use in people.

Like PT-141, it is a ring of seven amino acids rather than an open chain. Of the studies cited here, the 2000 study comes closest to a controlled human trial: 20 men, with a placebo for comparison.

Questions about MT-2

What side effects were reported in MT-2 studies?

Nausea, yawning and tiredness in 1996, and frequent nausea in 2000. A 2017 review linked melanotan to mole changes and a few skin cancers in case reports.

How is MT-2 related to PT-141?

They are close relatives: lab-made rings of seven amino acids acting on melanocortin receptors.

Is MT-2 the same as Melanotan II?

Yes. MT-2 is shorthand for Melanotan II.
