DSIP 10mg peptide

DSIP 10mg peptide: a research vial of DSIP, a nine amino acid peptide first found in rabbit blood in Basel in 1977, whose small human studies disagree; Peptides Hanoi links three papers on DSIP: studies in people from 1987 and 1992, and a 2006 review.

What is DSIP?

DSIP 10mg is a nine amino acid peptide first found in rabbit blood in 1977, with a long, unsettled research history. Its handful of human studies do not agree with one another.

The letters stand for delta sleep-inducing peptide. Researchers in Basel, Switzerland, isolated it in 1977 from rabbit blood collected from the veins of the brain. It runs to nine amino acids.

The name promised more than the science has delivered. A 2006 review noted that no gene or receptor for it had been found, and without them its role is hard to pin down.

What the 3 PubMed papers cited for DSIP looked at, 1987 to 2006

A 2006 review weighed the tie between DSIP and sleep, and pointed to a gap: no gene or receptor for it has been found.

Two small human studies belong side by side. In 1987, fourteen middle-aged people with long-term insomnia slept in a laboratory for seven nights, on DSIP and on a placebo, while their sleep and daytime alertness were measured.

Five years later, a double-blind study gave DSIP to sixteen people with insomnia and measured their sleep against a placebo; its authors judged the effect weak and unlikely to matter much for insomnia.

Both human studies are small and decades old, and the review that weighs them calls the link between DSIP and sleep weak.

Reading the DSIP record

DSIP is a case of a name that runs ahead of the evidence. It was called a sleep-inducing peptide in 1977, before anyone knew how it worked. The human studies cited here are two small ones, and a 2006 review found no receptor for it.

A reader can hold both studies in mind at once. Neither was large, the later one was double-blind, and the review that weighed them calls the link weak.

The 1987 study was a lab study, with sleep measured night by night over seven nights, but in a very small group of 14 people.

The human studies were small. The 1987 study had 14 people with severe long-term insomnia, measured in a sleep lab over seven nights and compared with a placebo. The 1992 study, which was double-blind, had 16.

Questions about DSIP

Does DSIP have a known receptor?

Not in the papers cited here. A 2006 review reported that neither a gene nor a receptor for DSIP had been found.

How were the DSIP sleep studies run?

Both were small. Fourteen people slept in a laboratory for seven nights in 1987, and sixteen took part in a double-blind study in 1992, each set against a placebo.

Who first found DSIP?

A team in Basel in 1977, working with blood drawn from the brain veins of rabbits.
